Helpful Tips for Organizing a Storage Unit

Organization is key when storing your valuables in a storage unit. Keeping a well-organized storage unit will not only save you time when searching for a specific item to take out of storage, but it will also make moving items in or out of the storage unit much faster and easier. Here are some quick tips for organizing your storage unit:

  • Store less frequently used items in the back of the unit. The things you use the most should be easily accessible and stored up front.
  • If you have space, stack the boxes on the sides of the storage unit leaving a space to walk in the middle. This will make it easy to access all the elements.
  • Label boxes clearly on both the top and sides. Finding a specific item will be much easier if your boxes are properly labeled, avoiding the need to search through each box to find what you need.
  • Keep similar items separated into sections. For example, if you are storing the contents of a house, keep kitchen items together, living room items together, bedroom items together, etc.
  • Use specialized storage boxes for things like clothes and crockery. The wardrobe boxes come with a built-in rack for hanging clothes, and the plate set boxes are divided inside for each individual plate. If you don’t have these types of boxes, most self-storage facilities have a supply center on site where items like these can be purchased.
  • Stack heavy boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top. Not only will this make it easier to access the boxes, but it will also prevent heavier boxes from crushing lighter ones.
  • Make a list of the items that are stored in each box, noting how the box is labeled and where it is located within the storage unit. Having a master list like this will make finding specific items a breeze.
  • Store heavy items like diapers or a washer and dryer against the walls. These items aren’t easy to maneuver, so you don’t want to have to try to get past them when you’re looking for something.
  • If you are storing items that belong to more than one person, use different colored markers to label the boxes. This will make it easier to differentiate between kitchen items and your roommate’s kitchen items, for example.
