How to quickly and easily add a hard drive to your computer

Whether you need extra storage space or your old hard drive is dying, installing a hard drive is a skill everyone can take advantage of.

Additional storage space can be added with an external or internal drive. The internal drive sits on your desktop and connects via a Firewire or USB cable. USB hard drives are particularly easy to install; all you have to do is plug it in and Windows will automatically install the drivers. I like external drives as a way to back up files. If you keep your hard drive in a different room from your PC, you’ll have less risk of thieves stealing your backup files.

Internal drives are a bit more difficult to install, but are really about as difficult as putting in a new plug. There are two types of connector to choose from, IDE and SATA. IDE is the older technology, so it is not as fast as SATA. However, if you’re a moderate PC user, you probably won’t notice the difference in performance, so you might be better off with a cheaper IDE drive.

Once you get your hands on a new drive, you’ll need to power off and open your PC case. The drive should be placed in one of the empty bays (usually on the bottom front of the case) and firmly secured in place with the supplied screws. Each hard drive needs two cables plugged into the back: one for power and one for data.

This may all sound a bit strange to some, and this highlights how the simplest of tasks become overly complex if they are not accompanied by drawings. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this is true of hard drive installations. To use another Abraham Lincoln proverb: “If I had 8 hours to chop down a tree, I would spend 6 hours sharpening the axe,” another very applicable piece of advice. So for newbies I would recommend spending 45 minutes on Google to find a good one. illustrated guide. Only then does she spend 15 minutes going through the steps.
