Inspiring the world.

It was the night before “Giftmas”

I don’t know about you, but I thought Christmas was celebrated on December 25. Growing up, due to family traditions, I celebrated Christmas primarily on December 24, when my parents would wake my brother and me up (around midnight) to open our well-deserved (yeah right!) presents. And as the years went by, the “wake up” time got earlier and earlier until we were opening all the presents by 9pm. I’ve heard of people celebrating Christmas around December 25th, but now it’s gone too far!

Would you believe me if I told you that there is Christmas in July? This is the most popular Christmas of any “December”, where people enjoy shopping and giving gifts to each other. I recently heard on the radio that there would soon be a Christmas in September in my area. When will the madness end? Just a quick reminder for everyone… Christmas is actually to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and should be considered a religious celebration. It is not an excuse to go shopping or receive gifts!

I have a great suggestion to put forward… We should start naming Christmas on December 25 as “Christ Day” and make it a celebration purely for those who are believers! None of this crazy “I shop for you, you shop for me” ritual of gift exchange. In return, we could call the other Christmas days “Giftmas” to celebrate them with a shower of gift exchanges, tree decorations, and eggnog. This way, there would be no confusion!

Now I know that many fundraisers use these non-December “Christmas” to have fun and raise funds for some very special needs. I understand that our society associates Christmas with money and spending as opposed to the birth of Christ. I know that the word “Christmas” lost all its original meaning a long time ago. My goal is not to change any of this, but to get the meaning and the real reason behind December 25th… to give it back the respect and appreciation it so richly deserves and currently lacks.

I for one will start this tradition for my family and celebrate both Christ Day and Giftmas! So until December 25th, I wish you all a happy “Giftmas in September”!
