Kansas Golf Vacation – Wolf Creek Golf Course

I played Wolf Creek Golf Links, Inc. located in Olathe, Kansas a couple of weeks ago in a Kansas City Cup game and I have to say it was a very beautiful golf course. We won the match, which may have made it a lot better, but I thought I’d post my review of the course while it was still fresh in my mind.

If you’re new to Wolf Creek or haven’t heard of it, you’re in for a surprise. First of all, it is a club for men only. And that literally means no women allowed. The waiters are men. The girls in the car are men. Everyone there is a man. It’s actually a bit of a strange experience, but I guess some people look for that kind of environment.

The fact that it is for men only makes it a very exclusive golf course, and it is 100% private (except for events like the KC Cup, where we were able to play because of the format). I don’t know the exact fees required to become a member, but based on the form of the course, I’m sure they are quite high.

The course itself, although located in Olathe, Kansas, is very isolated. It’s in the southernmost part of Olathe, in the middle of a bunch of fields. The isolation provides great tranquility and a great golf experience.

Driving to the course is not an imposing experience like you might have in other exclusive places. The clubhouse is unassuming, neither overly extravagant nor shoddy. There’s a bar, changing room, and dining room, among other rooms (after the round, I looked at a poker table located at the back of a room full of gentlemen playing what I’m going to assume was a friendly game). The course is closed, but again, it doesn’t seem as exclusive as rumored.

I think the reason the clubhouse and facilities are so modest is twofold. First, with only boys there, how extravagant does it have to be? Isn’t it great to say you belong to an all-male golf club? Secondly, because of the shape of the course, it was magnificent, it seems that all your money goes towards the maintenance and improvement of the golf course.

Starting off, the range was very nice. It’s grass, they have a ton of balls placed in golf ball bags at each station (about 20 stations), and they have a ton of bags full of tees for your indulgence. Out of range, you hit several different flag poles at several different yards. He was in great shape.

If you ever play here, a couple of putts on the green are a must. The greens are firm and fast, and beautifully cut. They roll well, but take some getting used to because they are faster than your average green. For me honestly the day we played I thought the greens were marginally fast. But I think it was because we played very early in the season. In the middle of summer, I could see them being fast as lightning.

As for the course itself, there is a lot of undulation and a lot of holes with little or no undulation. There are two for three in particular, one in the front nine, one in the back, which I particularly liked. The first was slightly downhill with water protecting the front and right side of the green (everyone missed long and to the left, go figure). The other by three sits high on the tee before descending what must be at least 100 feet to the green. It’s a fantastic tee shot.

Overall I would rate the course 9 out of 10. The course was excellent from tee to green and I had a great time. The only thing that kept it from being a 10 was that wow factor (although one of my opponents was a former major league star pitcher, that was great, and he was a decent golfer). It was a very nice course, but when I finished I didn’t feel any different as a golfer, that’s what takes me out of a 10.
