What is the best way to memorize organ music and remember it for a long time?

Many organists want to be able to play the most wonderful organ compositions from memory. This ability allows them to know music on a much deeper level and gives them many advantages over organists who do not work on memorizing their music.

But is it possible to store music in our permanent memory so that we can play it after many months? The answer is yes, and this article will show you how.

First of all, we must understand that after memorizing the piece the next day, we must repeat it, otherwise we will soon forget it. What does it take to truly memorize the composition? We can take the analogy with learning the words of the new language.

Imagine if today you have to memorize 5 new words in a foreign language. How many times do you have to repeat them to memorize them? Perhaps repetition of 10 times each would suffice for most people. Will you remember them tomorrow? Not really, unless you repeat them tomorrow, right? So if you repeat them tomorrow, will you remember them permanently? Not yet.

We have to repeat them about 100 times over a long period of time to be able to remember them permanently. That is, the repetition of only 10 times stores them in our short-term memory, but if we repeat them 100 times over a few months, then we will have them stored in our long-term memory.

Going back to playing the organ, we can also use a similar system to memorize music and keep it in long-term memory. We will use a special strategy to achieve this goal.

Memorize the music and repeat it 10 times. Then you will have to repeat it after one day, two days, four days, one week, two weeks, one month, two months, four months, six months and finally after one year. Always repeat your memorized organ piece 10 times.

Note that the length of the piece doesn’t matter as long as you repeat it that many times. However, I suggest you try something shorter to start with. After 1 year you will have 110 repetitions of this piece and it will be stored in your long-term memory. Then you can leave it for many months, but you will not forget it.

However, I do not mean that you should play ONLY this piece for a year. Of course, plays and other organ compositions, but this is for the sake of an experiment. You can memorize more pieces, if you have time.
