Teaching Prenatal Yoga requires a special blend of certain techniques of relaxation, asana, and pranayama specifically designed to guide the pregnant woman into a state of self-awareness, spiritual balance, and overall physical well-being. Yoga literally means union in us. In pregnancy, this idea of spiritual union extends to the growing life inside the womb, which is understood by the ancients as a link to the spirit world. The ancients believed that the fetus was a mini-manifestation of the soul. With training, Yoga can lead a woman into experiencing the inner state of being a mini-manifestation of her spirit – hence the term “Prenatal Yoga.”

I teach Prenatal Yoga because every pregnant women is different. Some mothers-to-be experience heightened anxiety and depression postpartum, while others have steady emotional highs and lows. Some are already accustomed to yoga practices prior to conception; others are new to the practice. Regardless of how each of these pregnant women is currently feeling, I believe Yoga can be beneficial to both her physical and mental health. For this reason, I invite you to continue reading this article, which will provide you with a brief description of my teaching prenatal yoga, as well as the benefits for both mother and child.

In teaching prenatal yoga to expectant mothers, I begin with breathing techniques, which are designed specifically for those who are experiencing a full-term pregnancy. The first step in teaching prenatal yoga is learning to inhale from the diaphragm, rather than blowing from the lungs. Many expectant mothers find breathing meditation both relaxing and therapeutic. Once you learn to breathe from the diaphragm, it is essential that you learn to focus on your belly, without any thought of your exteriors. It is during this stage of prenatal yoga that pregnant women are able to begin the process of belly scanning, or viewing the internal organs from this area.

As you progress through your yoga training, I encourage you to continue to practice teaching prenatal yoga on a daily basis, up until your third trimester. The third trimester is a time in every pregnancy when your body is changing dramatically, both physically and mentally. It is during this time that you will discover many of your bodily pains, which will heal naturally as your body adapts to your changing physical and mental state. During the third trimester, it is important that you maintain your awareness on your breathing, as well as your pulse.

To guide you through the transition between your third trimester and fourth trimester of pregnancy, I suggest you continue with the breathing exercises that I previously described. It is important that you continue to use the breathing exercise while you teach pregnant students. I suggest that you begin to incorporate more of a focus on the breath before introducing the concepts of yoga poses in the third trimester. In addition to teaching prenatal yoga and breathing exercises, you should also begin to incorporate mantras and spiritual songs into your classes. Mantras and spiritual songs are excellent tools for helping to relax and soothe pregnant students.

In addition to teaching yoga poses, you should also be sure to get on a consistent yoga routine, which can be as simple as walking your dog, taking a yoga class or even joining a sweat session with other pregnant women. The more consistent you are with your yoga, even during your pregnancy, the more relaxed and stress-free you will be during your entire pregnancy. This will also help to ease any upper back and shoulder problems that may occur as your body changes and grows during pregnancy. In closing, if you are a beginner yoga instructor, you should try teaching prenatal yoga before advancing to teaching more advanced yoga classes.
