The Honda Fit Hybrid: a car of mythical proportions

At the time of this writing, the long-rumored Honda Fit Hybrid appears to be a myth at best. In truth, there has been no official announcement from Honda. However, it appears that Honda will launch a new hybrid to replace the Insight. Will this be a FIT hybrid? No one but Honda knows for sure. Really matters? In my opinion, no. The bottom line is that I think Honda will release a respectable replacement for the Insight in the next year or two.

Whether to call it Fit, Insight, or anything else, it doesn’t really matter. This new vehicle will continue to serve the intended purpose of the model it is replacing. For me, that’s the only thing that really matters. There was quite a stir last year over the launch of the Fit hybrid in 2008 or 2009, but that’s it, rumor mill. This new hybrid is most likely priced well below the Civic. This will open up great opportunities for a while for a new class of consumers who would not normally consider purchasing hybrid technology.

Honda covers the hybrid niche very well. The Insight and the upcoming replacement compete (and will continue to compete) well against the Toyota Prius. The Civic is a powerful and great looking car that is very affordable for many people who cannot afford the more expensive hybrid models. Last but not least, the Accord hybrid is right up there with the Toyota Camry, two of the best-selling cars in their standard versions.

Two areas that Honda seems to be lacking in is the availability of a hybrid truck or SUV. I think the fact that Honda is concentrating on subcompacts, compacts, and full-size sedans is a great thing. The advances they have made in technology have been wonderful. Let Honda be the first to have a really great hybrid lineup first, then go after the other smaller niche markets.

In closing, those waiting for a Honda Fit Hybrid, don’t hold your breath. But all is not lost, there should be a comparable model available very soon now that should meet your needs.
