WoW WotLK Guide: Enchantment Changes

The latest expansion pack for World of Warcraft, Wrath of the Lich King, and its multitude of updates and improvements, seems to have provided a more than welcome breath of fresh air to the cult game. One of the most notable improvements is the changes to Enchanting.

For a long time, Enchanting has been one of the most frustrating talents in the game, being little more than a service profession, and a pretty basic one at that. Despite its shortcomings, it’s still a prerequisite for mastering much of what players really wanted (and needed) from the game.

Getting rich as a wizard has been extremely hard work, until now.

The release of Wrath of the Lich King, with its many improvements, has brought with it significant changes to the professions. Among these, and to the benefit of enchanters, are those that will make it easier for enchanters to (finally) start producing salable goods that can, at long last, earn them decent gold on the auction house. This, at the very least, will offer an alternative to the already monotonous path of gold disenchantment.

One of the biggest changes to Enchanting is that Enchanters will now be able to trade enchantments (as a result of the vellums Inscription creates). These vellums can be infused with enchantments which can then be sold at auction; thereafter they can be used by non-enchanters to enchant their own equipment, effectively making Enchanting a trade profession.

This fundamental change in the Charming profession has answered the prayers of seasoned Charmers, who have been waiting for something like this to happen for the better part of the last four years.

Before you Enchanters get too excited though, just keep in mind that the Enchanter profession has also taken a few hits as a result of many other professions (and other options) that offer alternatives to enchantments that are just as effective (if not better). This may have already led people to start curbing the use of enchantments.

On the plus side, the ability to sell enchantments now makes them much more valuable (and possibly desirable) than they once were, but be aware that demand may drop in many slots and armor slots as the game progresses. .

Only time will tell how much of an impact these changes to Enchanting will have on the profession and its gold production potential.
