Tips for being a pro in the NHL 09

Playing NHL 09 in Be a Pro mode is something we’ve been dreaming of in a hockey game for many years. Geeky yeah, funny heck yah! Mastering it and trying to figure out why your trainer is always telling you how bad you are can be challenging. Try these quick tips to up your game.

Position Scoring

If you play hockey in real life, you should be able to figure this out pretty easily. Positional play is everything in the game of hockey and being in the right place is what counts.

  • Follow the blue arrow. If you have no idea where you need to be, follow the big blue arrow that will appear and show you where you need to be. After a while you should have an idea of where you need to be with each type of attack, offensive or defensive.
  • If you are a winger, try to play on your side as much as you can. Playing on the opposite wing, unless the big blue line also tells you to, will really put the manager in a bad mood.
  • If you’re playing defense, don’t go below the offensive matchup circles. Your job is to play the blue line in the offensive zone and play closer to the goalie in your own zone.

Team play

Being a good team player means more than just scoring goals and passing the puck.

  • Pass the disc. If you don’t pass, your team will hate you.
  • You can call for the puck with Right Trigger, but remember that if that pass is intercepted, you will receive team play points for causing a turnover.
  • The most important factor in this score is the timing of the line changes. You should only switch when your team has the puck, and preferably when you’re moving on ice and not attacking.
  • Do not change lines when you are in your own zone. This will kill your team’s game rating big time.

Statistics

Stats are really how you look on the scoreboard compared to how well you played. You could potentially ignore the other 2 categories and still get an A+ in Stats if you’re scoring and getting assists.

  • Scoring a goal will definitely make your coach happy.
  • Getting a help will also help you a lot.
  • In addition to scoring goals and providing assists, you want to fulfill your role. If you are a concealer, check. If you play defense, block shots.
  • Get a big +/-. You get +1 for a goal scored while on the ice and -1 if a goal is scored against you. Stay on the positive side and the coach will like you.
